What Insurance Covers Addiction Treatment? Medicaid, Medicare, and More
What Insurance Covers Addiction Treatment?
The law says insurance must cover treatment. Here is how to make it work for you.
Medicaid
Medicaid covers addiction treatment in all 50 states, though specific services vary by state. Coverage typically includes detox, residential treatment (in facilities under 16 beds in some states), outpatient, IOP, PHP, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Apply through your state’s Medicaid program or at HealthCare.gov.
Medicare
Medicare Part A covers inpatient treatment. Part B covers outpatient counseling, PHP, and some medications. Part D covers prescription medications including buprenorphine.
Private Insurance / Employer Plans
The Mental Health Parity Act requires group health plans to cover addiction treatment at parity with medical care. Call the number on your insurance card and ask specifically for “behavioral health benefits.”
